The COSPAS-SARSAT system is an important global system for alerting, search and rescue in emergency situations. The system has been developed to enable fast and accurate detection and location of radio beacons in distress and thus faster and more efficient rescue of seafarers and ships in distress around the world. The system is based on a satellite and ground infrastructure and consists of radio beacons, satellites, ground stations for signal reception and coordination centers. There are three main satellite support subsystems: LEOSAR, GEOSAR and MEOSAR. One of the most important components of the modernization of the COSPAS-SARSAT system is the introduction of MEOSAR, which represents a significant advance over the previous LEOSAR. The MEOSAR system comprises satellites in medium Earth orbit that enable faster, more precise and more comprehensive search and rescue.
