The beginning of hydrographic activity can be connected with the beginning of the exploitation of seas and oceans by man. At the beginning of the hydrographic activity, the biggest challenge was the accurate determination of hydrographic data and their presentation on official navigation charts. With the invention of depth sounders and the introduction of GNSS into public use, hydrographic organizations can collect official hydrographic data with high accuracy. For hydrographic data to become official, it must be collected by IHO standard S-44. The S-44 standard specifies, among other things, the limits of vertical and horizontal accuracy of the measured data. The most common technologies used by hydrographic organizations for hydrographic surveying are the multibeam depth sounder and the GNSS system for horizontal positioning. The combination of a multi-beam depth sounder and GNSS system proved to be the most accurate method of collecting hydrographic data, but they have a flaw, which is the time required to survey the sea area, which requires large economic resources, and the existence of shallow areas where the hydrographic ship is unable to survey due to draft. Due to the aforementioned shortcomings, hydrographic organizations are investigating the possibilities of applying modern technologies in hydrographic surveying to be able to survey larger sea areas in significantly less time. The LIDAR system offers an adequate substitute for the survey of shallow marine areas. The advantages of the LIDAR system are the speed of surveying and the possibility of surveying shallow seas, while the disadvantage is the impossibility of surveying deeper seas. Satellite bathymetry is currently not used in the creation of official navigation charts because the data obtained from satellite images has not yet been sufficiently explored. To solve the problem of large sea areas where there is no hydrographic data or hydrographic data is considered unsafe for safe navigation, IHO introduces the concept of CSB. The CSB concept aims to increase the base of bathymetric data for comparison with the existing ones and enables obtaining data in parts of the world where a hydrographic survey of the seabed has never been done.
