This paper analyzes the marking of maritime channels and the regulation of navigation through the channels and through two examples, Kanal sv. Ante and the Mali Ždrelac passage are considering the establishment of new traffic regulation and the installation of traffic signals in the Mali Ždrelac passage. The introductory part of the paper defines the term channel and describes the key elements that make up the channel. Then the influence of external factors such as wind, waves, sea currents and shallow water on the maneuvering of the ship in the channels is considered. The paper also addresses channel modeling, including fundamental design criteria, consideration of concept solutions and major designs, and channel lifetime. The work points to the standardization of the marking of both sea routes and sea channels, as well as the latest trends and tendencies in the development of the marking of sea channels, and is in the works. Also, the work deals with the regulation of navigation channels through regulations and rules that apply to vessels, in order to ensure safe navigation and environmental protection. Through the analysis of various studies and examples of good practice, the research points to the importance of proper marking of channels and effective regulation of navigation in order to ensure safe and efficient navigation on sea routes as key elements of a safe and efficient navigation system. Improving the safety of navigation is the daily task of all maritime traffic stakeholders. The marking of canals and the regulation of navigation in canals are primarily aimed at the safety of navigation. By reviewing the current practice of canal marking and canal navigation regulation, we analyze how different approaches can be applied to optimize canal safety. The paper presents the maritime markings of the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities, i.e. the IALA system.Since maritime signaling facilities are an integral part of each channel in operation, there is one description of the maritime signaling facility according to the IALA A system. The paper analyzes the regulation of navigation in the Channels of Sv. Ante and through the passage of Mali Ždrelac, including specific commands, a monitoring and management system and the use of Port Traffic Lights − PTL. The paper compares the two mentioned sea passages.
