With view to vessel to achieve certain constant speed it is necessary to achieve propulsion force. The magnitude of this force what depends on resistance is achieved by source of power from the vessel within system called ship propulsion system. This system is composed of propulsion engine, engine or turbine, shaft, screw and gearbox if necessary. Although due to cost efficiency diesel engines are the most used on vessels but steam and gas turbines are also found. Steam turbine is still first choice of high power propulsion units. Gas turbines as ship propulsion machines have most advantageous power density. The main reason of its minor usage is relatively low level of energy utilization comparing to other propulsion systems. It is expected that more stricter regulations of International Maritime Organization for preventing air pollution from vessels will increase usage of gas turbines because it can fulfil claimed conditions. At the present time, because of the need of maritime market for a more efficient propulsion system, the ships are using combined propulsion systems. Those systems are usually performed in combination of turbines (gas or steam turbine), diesel engine or electric motor as the driving forces of the system. Selection of the most appropriate solution enables optimal power management with minimal fuel consumption. The objective of this article is to provide survey of realization and performance of turbine propulsion systems underlining the appropriate application on individual types of vessels.
